(part 1 because i’m sure i’ll be yelling about kuroo in the future)

so i was rereading haikyuu yet again and started going through the nekoma match when i noticed something about kuroo’s form

huh okay he’s left-handed that’s odd for a middle you’d typically expect to see lefties playing right side but whatever

yeah they’re gonna have to adjust the block for a leftie lmao wait what

kuroo is AMBIDEXTROUS

DO YOU KNOW HOW IMPRESSIVE THAT IS? DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD HE WOULD HAVE HAD TO WORK TO BE ABLE TO HIT WITH BOTH HANDS? DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH TRAINING IT PROBABLY TOOK TO PULL THIS OFF?

hitting lefthanded is ACTUALLY COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from hitting righthanded.

1. you would have to change the footwork of your approach (furudate refers to this as a “run-up”; it’s the way you would come in before you jump for the set), so your body has to be so used to switching between hands that your feet move automatically according to whichever hand you decide to use—meaning muscle memory, which comes from an ungodly number of reps. (especially as a middle. attacks in the middle are all based on speed and quick reflexes, so kuroo has approximately NO TIME to hesitate either way or the attack will be screwed up)

2. the angles you can hit are completely different depending on which hand you use, especially when considering the blocker. the middle blocker will set up in front of your hitting shoulder in order to block you. righties usually find it easier to swing to left back, or to their right, because hitting across your body is a) hard and b) requires you to avoid the blocker. lefties usually find it easier to swing to right back, or to their left. you would have to account for the available range of angles you can hit when switching hands as well as the location of the blocker.

3. “but femi, couldn’t it just be a fluke?”
